The Moderator of the Church of Scotland has met with Holyrood opposition leader Ruth Davidson to promote political involvement in churches.
Rt Rev Dr Russell Barr met Ms Davidson as part of the Meet Your MSP project run by the Scottish Churches Parliamentary Office (SCPO). Ruth is one of Dr Barr’s local Edinburgh MSPs and she was delighted to take part in the initiative.
Topics discussed included Brexit, the homelessness crisis in Scotland and the importance of collective endeavour, and the pressures of life as a politician.
Dr Barr said: “At a time when politicians are not always trusted, one of the values of the Meet Your MSP project is the opportunity it creates to see someone face to face, to hear about their cares and concerns, to learn about what they do and what they cannot do, and to build a more trusting relationship.
“As well as being Moderator, I am an Edinburgh minister and it was good to meet one of my Edinburgh MSPs. We had a lively conversation about homelessness, Brexit and about what it means to be a woman serving in public life.”
The Meet Your MSP project has been running since the summer and has reached across the country with over 60 meetings taking place so far. The project aims to involve all 129 MSPs in meeting their local congregations and starting new relationships.
Dr Barr added: “Having enjoyed my meeting with Ruth Davidson if you have not already done so, let me encourage you to contact the MSPs for your area and I am sure you will be pleasantly when you meet them.”
